Our Breweries

DB Breweries owns and operates four breweries around New Zealand - Waitemata Brewery in Otahuhu, Tui Brewery in Mangatainoka, Monteith's Brewery in Greymouth and Mainland Brewery in Timaru.

All our breweries are committed to respecting the environment and participating in and inspiring our communities.

Our innovative formal waste, water and energy reduction programmes have been in place since 1998. Each year we review our progress and refine our approach - we are more interested in a long-lasting, innovative solution, than a quick fix.

We pay specific attention to the consumption of New Zealand’s precious raw materials, water, energy and other resources within our processes, and minimise waste emissions to the environment wherever we can.

Our breweries participate in our communities in a way that is meaningful to them, from the Pukaha Mt Bruce sponsorship, to buying bricks to support the flood-devastated Kaeo Rugby Club.

Waitemata Brewery

The original brewery opened in 1929 during a time of†international recession and stiff competition. Despite this, the company thrived thanks to the innovativeness of original brewery owner William Coutts and liquor merchant and distributor Henry (later Sir Henry) Kelliher.

After World War II the Waitemata Brewery underwent considerable expansion, developing a number of hotels and increasing the tanker fleet to take advantage of growing demand for its products.

In 1950 William Coutts' son, Morton, developed the continuous fermentation (CF) method of brewing. His refined method eventually replaced the batch system, allowing a continuous flow of ingredients and eliminating all variables to produce the perfect beer. This world-first confirmed DB Breweries as a leader and put New Zealandís brewing industry on the map. Today Waitemata Brewery produces a combination of both Batch and CF products.

Waitemata continues to push the boundaries of efficiency and innovation to meet the growing demands of the New Zealand and overseas markets.

Monteith’s Brewery

From humble beginnings in 1868, the Monteith's family-owned Phoenix Brewery became the West Coast's most popular brewery for its strong tasting, full-bodied ale. The Phoenix Brewery later merged with a group of small breweries to form Westland Brewing Company, predecessor to today's Monteith's Brewing Company which has been part of the DB family since 1970.

More than 150 years on the Monteith's Brewery is going strong, using the same brewing traditions established since its inception to produce beers to exacting standards.

Our beerís uniqueness is due to the combination of brewing processes, ingredients and the approach of the brewers. All Monteith's beers are batch brewed with pure ingredients, slavishly adhering to the quirky characteristics of original styles (with a little bit of ingenuity added for good measure).

Monteithís continues to brew up the latest tastes in beers and the original Greymouth brewery is now one of the most popular tourist attractions on the West Coast.

Tui Brewery

Entrepreneur Henry Wagstaff established the Tui Brewery at Mangatainoka in 1889 with the dream of supplying "export quality brews to beer drinkers around the colony" and he quickly earned a reputation for excellence.

In 1904, with new owner Henry Cowan at the helm since 1903, the brewery won its first award for Tui East India Pale Ale at the Palmerston North A&P Show. This established Tui as a beer of choice and sales grew steadily for the next decade, leading to the final name change to the Tui Brewery in 1923.

Tui came into the DB Breweries family 1969. Since then the brewery has undergone a large-scale modernisation programme. It is a significant employer in its community and supports many local events throughout the region.

With a new Tui National Park and reinvigorated brewery tours, the Tui brewery is open to a whole new realm of possibilities as a big boy's playground.
